“President! I’ve come with news of our members!”

It was after school three days after the meeting. The person triumphantly gallivanting into the bass section classroom was Ririka Genzaki, the oboe player. Since there were no second year members in the double reed section, it was inevitable that she would be tasked with being the section leader despite being a first year.

“You’ve already decided?”

Kanade Hisaishi, sitting beside Kumiko, couldn’t hide her surprise. Quite like a pet cat playing nice with its owner, Ririka nestled close to Kanade.

“Hmm, yeppies.”

“What piece?”

“What? You didn’t hear that Kanade? My, how bold of you, but that’s what I love about you.”

“Yes, yes, I love you too.”

“You’re hiding your feelings when you say it like that!”

While Kanade and Ririka were playing around like usual, Kumiko looked over the handout that Ririka handed to her. It was a woodwind quintet consisting of only first year musicians. They had the oboe, bassoon, flute, clarinet, and horn in it. As she confirmed the names of the members beside each instrument, Kumiko spoke to the two girls playing around.

“Ririka-chan, you didn’t include Kanade-chan?”

“Don’t you think I wanted to play with her? But Kanade said she only wanted to play with brass instruments, so I held myself back.”

In response to Ririka’s expressive pouts, Kanade clung to Kumiko’s arm. Her warmth pressed against the back of Kumiko’s hand.

“Senpai, don’t be fooled by her. She obviously planned to have a woodwind quintet from the very beginning.”

“You think so Kanade? Have you decided your members yet?”

“I’m still in negotiations, but so what?”

“You are. It must be tough to get eight people.”

“It’s been difficult to get a horn on board.”

“Sorries. I already went ahead and got one. They allowed it due to how cute I am.”

“Your cuteness and you stealing one from me are two different things.”

“Huh? Even you’re saying I’m cute Kanade! If you keep complimenting me, I’ll turn so red. Hehe.”

Kumiko already no longer understood what they were talking about. Ririka stuck her tongue out while Kanade sighed exaggeratedly.

Listening to the conversation as she practiced near the front of the classroom, Hazuki tilted her head in confusion.

“Hmm, you assembled a woodwind quintet Ririka-chan?”

“Right. We thought we’d try Ibert’s ‘Three Short Pieces.’”

“Why’d you need a horn for that? Aren’t horns brass instruments?”

Mirei, who was oiling her pistons beside Hazuki, replied to Hazuki’s question.

“It’s common for woodwind quintets to have a flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, and horn in them. There were many opportunities for the horn to play with woodwind instruments in classical music, and there wasn’t a distinction between woodwind and brass at that time, so they became called a woodwind quintet. That custom continues to today.”

“Oooh, you knew that Mic-chan? You know so much!”

Holding her tuba beside her, Satsuki nodded deeply. With the third years retired, the tuba players were now the trio of Hazuki, Mirei, and Satsuki. Kumiko still hadn’t gotten used to Takuya and Riko not being in the classroom yet. They were the heart of the bass section.

Separating her body from Kumiko’s arm, Kanade lifted up the edges of her mouth into a satisfied smile.
